‘I sweetly tolling men do call to taste on meats that feeds the soul’
1604 Tenor
The tenor bell dates to 1604, the first year of the reign of King James I.
in 1553 it was recorded that at Bolingbroke there were ‘three great belles and one sanctus bell’. A large Tenor bell was added in 1604. This Tenor and the Sanctus Bell are all that remain of the older bells. Perhaps the others were lost during the damage to the Tower during the Castle seige of 1643.
In 1897 five new bells were donated by Miss Marian Hairby Wingate: four in memory of her family (the Wingates of Hareby Hall) and the Treble in commemoration of the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria. The new bells were from the foundry of John Taylor & Co., Loughborough. Taylors rehung the bells in a new steel frame in 1931 and more recently replaced the bearings.
The Bells are regularly rung for services and special occasions. The Bell-ringing Band have regular weekly practices on Wednesday evening, with additional novice sessions on Monday evening. The Band are the only active bell-ringers in the Bolingbroke Deanery and so ring at other area Churches for weddings and special services.
The Tower Captain is Mr. Colin Simpson.
